What is thyroid gland?

Thyroid Gland The butterfly-shaped thyroid gland is one of the largest endocrine glands found in your neck. This gland makes two hormones that are secreted into your blood: triiodothyronine(T3) and thyroxine (T4). These hormones are important for all the body cells to work normally.

The thyroid is located at the base of your neck, just below your Adam’s apple. The thyroid is made up of the right lobe and left lobe joined by a small bridge of thyroid tissue known as the isthmus. The two lobes are on either side of your wind-pipe.

Functions of the thyroid gland

The thyroid gland releases the hormones that control body metabolism, i.e., the way your body uses the energy. The hormones also regulate important body functions such as:

  • Heart rate
  • Breathing
  • Menstrual cycles
  • Body weight
  • Body temperature
  • Muscle strength
  • Cholesterol levels
  • Central and peripheral nervous systems
  • Much more

Thyroid function test

The thyroid secretes the two hormones it makes into your bloodstream. One of those hormones is called thyroxine (also known as T4); this hormone contains four atoms of iodine. The second is called triiodothyronine (also called T3), and it contains three atoms of iodine. In the tissues and cells of your body, the T4 is converted to T3 because it is the T3 that is biologically active and can influence the activity of tissues and cells of the body.

The T3 secreted by your thyroid gland or converted from T 4 influence the metabolism of the body cells. It means it regulates the speed at which the cells of your body work. If you have hyperthyroidism as a result of too much secretion of the hormones from your thyroid gland, the increased activity of your body organs or cells may lead, for instance, to the quickening of your heart rate. It can also increase the activity of your intestine and cause you to have frequent bowel motions or diarrhea.

Also, if too little thyroid hormones are produced, the organs and cells of your body slow down. This condition is called hypothyroidism. If you become hypothyroid, your heart rate may be slower than normal, and your intestines will start working sluggishly.

What is a thyroid disorder?

Thyroid problems disorder is conditions that affect your thyroid. The thyroid has vital roles to play in regulating numerous metabolic processes in your body. Different types of thyroid problems affect either its function or structure.

Types of thyroid problems

The specific kinds of thyroid problems are:

    • Hyperthyroidism
    • Hypothyroidism
    • Thyroid cancer
    • Thyroid Nodules
    • Goiter
    • Graves Disease


  • Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis.

What is Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid function)?

Hypothyroidism, also known as underactive thyroid disease, is a common disorder. If you have hypothyroidism, it means your thyroid gland is not making sufficient hormone. This will affect your heartbeat, how well you burn calories and also affect your body temperature. With hypothyroidism, your body processes slow down, and your metabolism becomes sluggish as a result of less energy your body is producing.

Women, especially those that are older than 60, are prone to hypothyroidism. It can cause some symptoms in its early stage, but over time, untreated hypothyroidism can lead to a number of health issues like obesity, infertility, heart disease, and joint pain.

Causes of hypothyroidism

There are several things that can cause thyroid problems. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is the most common cause of underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism).

Other causes include:

Radioactive iodine treatment: Doctors commonly prescribe this treatment to people with an overactive gland (hyperthyroidism). However, the cells in the thyroid gland can be destroyed by radiation, thereby causing hypothyroidism.

Thyroid surgery: Removing thyroid with surgery will lead to hypothyroidism. But if only a part of the thyroid is removed, then the remaining gland can still produce sufficient hormones for the needs of the body.

Use of some medications: Some medicines used to treat cancer, psychiatric conditions and heart problems can sometimes affect thyroid hormone production. These include lithium, interleukin-2, amiodarone (Pacerone, Cordarone) and inferno alpha.

Radiation therapy to the neck: Treating cancers like lymphoma requires radiation to the neck area. Radiation damages thyroid cells and when it does, producing hormones will be difficult for the gland.

Too little iodine in the diet: Your thyroid needs iodine to secrete thyroid hormones. The only way your body can get iodine is through your diet because your body doesn’t produce it. Iodized table salt is very rich in iodine. Other foods that are rich in iodine are saltwater fish, dairy products, seaweed, eggs, and shellfish.

Problems with the thyroid at birth: During birth, the thyroid of some babies may not develop correctly or work properly. We call this type of hypothyroidism congenital hypothyroidism.

Pregnancy: Even though the reason is not clear, inflammation sometimes occurs after pregnancy. This is called postpartum thyroiditis. Any woman with this problem usually experiences a severe increase in thyroid hormone levels, which are generally followed by a reduction in thyroid hormone secretion. Most women with this issue will regain their normal thyroid function.

Disorder of the hypothalamus: A rare form of hypothyroidism can occur if the hypothalamus in your brain doesn’t secrete enough of the hormone known as TRH. TRH affects the release of TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) from your pituitary gland.

Pituitary gland disorder or damage: A problem with pituitary gland can rarely interfere with thyroid hormone production. The pituitary gland makes a certain hormone known as TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone), which informs your thyroid about how much hormone it should secrete and release.

Hypothyroidism is mainly caused by an issue with the thyroid gland.

Secondary hypothyroidism occurs as a result of another issue of interference with the ability of thyroid to produce hormones. For instance, hypothalamus or pituitary gland produces hormones that trigger thyroid hormone release. If there is a problem with a n y of these glands, the thyroid can become underactive.

Symptoms and signs of thyroid problem

Hypothyroidism symptoms can often mimic other conditions and may also be vague. Its symptoms include:


  • Constipation
  • Fatigue
  • Dry skin
  • Greater sensitivity to cold (feeling cold when others are not)
  • Changes in the menstrual cycle, infertility, and low sex drive
  • Dry hair and hair loss
  • Depression
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome, joint pain, muscle pain, or tendonitis
  • Surprising weight gain and difficulty losing weight
  • Goiter, hoarse voice or snoring
  • Slow heart rate

A baby can have thyroid problems

  • You may not see any symptom of hypothyroidism in babies that have it, but if symptoms occur, they may include:
  • Constipation
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Low muscle tone
  • Little or no growth
  • Extreme sleepiness
  • Poor feeding habit
  • Whites of the eyes and yellowing of the skin (persistent jaundice)
  • Hoarse cry
  • Swollen tongue
  • Stomach Bloating
  • Puffy face

Is hypothyroidism hereditary?

Yes, hypothyroidism is genetic. If you ever have a family member with hypothyroidism, there is an increased chance that you will a l so have it. However, it could mean that you’ll develop a different thyroid problem, which is not the same as your family members.

Relationship between type 2 diabetes and hypothyroidism

According to a new study, having too little hormone in your blood raises the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

In his presentation, Layal Chaker, MD of Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, Netherland said, “Low thyroid function is associated with higher risk of developing diabetes, but also the progression from prediabetes to diabetes and this is even with the proper range of thyroid function. “Low thyroid function as represented by higher TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) is with a 1.2-fold increased risk of diabetes and a 1.4-fold increased risk for progression from prediabetes.”

It has been proven in internal medicine that there is an association between diabetes mellitus and thyroid disorder. So it is necessary to diagnose thyroid function in T2DM patients.

Relationship between hypothyroidism and Obesity

Hypothyroidism causes patients to gain weight and makes it difficult to lose weight because the hormones produced by the thyroid gland helps regulate metabolism. The thyroid secretes triiodothyronine and thyroxine, which helps the body to determine how fast it should metabolize carbohydrates and fat. So if the hormone produced is not sufficient, the patient begins to gain weight.

Heart disease and diabetes, two diseases that are commonly associated with obesity are also associated with hypothyroidism. Even though most of the symptoms of hypothyroidism are not life-threatening, the combination of hypothyroidism and obesity can be life-threatening. According to research, women with hypothyroidism are more likely to have blockages in their aorta and suffer from heart attacks.

Hypothyroidism testing

A thorough physical exam and medical history are the first steps in diagnosing mild (subclinical) hypothyroidism or hypothyroidism. If based on the result, your doctor suspects you have subclinical hypothyroidism or hypothyroidism; he will have to recommend you for a test to confirm the diagnosis.

Doctors always recommend a blood test to confirm a diagnosis of mild hypothyroidism or hypothyroidism. The tests mostly used are:

  • Thyroxine (T4) measurement
  • Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) test

If the two tests above are not normal, antithyroid antibody tests may determine whether you have an autoimmune disease called Hashimoto’s thyroiditis or not.

Hypothyroidism is more prevalent in older women, so most doctors recommend that old women be tested for the disorder during an annual physical examination. 

Hypothyroidism therapy

You can easily use thyroid hormone medicine to treat hypothyroidism. The most reliable and effective thyroid replacement hormone is human-made synthetic. You will have to regularly visit your doctor when you start the treatment, to ensure you have the right dose of medicine.

In many cases, hypothyroidism symptoms begin to improve within the first week after starting the treatment. Usually, all symptoms disappear within a few months. Children and infants with hypothyroidism should be treated. It may take older people with poor health longer time to respond to treatment.

How can exercise help combat hypothyroidism?

Most thyroid problems need medication and exercise can complement the treatment. Exercise can offer a natural antidote to the symptoms (e.g., muscle loss, weight gain, low energy levels, and depression) of hypothyroidism. Exercise raises the metabolism and increases lean muscle mass, helping you to burn more calories. Regular exercise also boosts your energy levels and mood. Hypothyroidism may cause low energy levels and sleeplessness, both of which can easily be lessened with regular exercise.

Moderately intense cardiovascular 30 minutes workout a day, five days in a week is recommended for adults. But before you begin any exercise, make sure you consult your doctor because your condition may require less exercise or more exercise and intensity.

Warning: exercise can help you alleviate the symptoms of thyroid problems, but it’s not a substitute for medical treatment. If you suspect any symptoms of hypothyroidism, consult your doctor for an accurate diagnosis and treatment. If you experience fatigue or lasting pain while working out, stop immediately and go to your doctor.

Here’s what to eat (and why) to improve your thyroid function:

The first thing you need to do is get off all those processed junk food, gluten, and sugar and start eating right. Here is what you can eat to combat thyroid problems.

  • Iodine rich food:  iodized salt, sushi, Nori Rolls, saltwater fish, seaweeds and seafood and Celtic sea salt
  • Eat sea vegetable two times a week
  • Cook your kale
  • Seaweed
  • Yogurt
  • Fish
  • ShellfishSalmon is Beneficial for Thyroid Problems
  • Eggs
  • Don’t be afraid of butter
  • Slow down your eating: Don’t rush when you are eating.
  • Vegetables and antioxidant-rich fruits, eg., bell peppers, tomatoes, blueberries, whole grains and other foods rich in antioxidants.
  • Selenium, eg., Brazil nuts, and sunflower seeds
  • Food is rich in tyrosine, eg., meats, legumes, and dairy. You can also take supplements, but ask your doctor first.


Food not recommended for thyroid disorder patient

Most common foods contain compounds that interfere with thyroid function. Hypothyroidism can be a tricky condition to manage, and what you eat can interfere with your treatment. Some nutrients heavily influence the function of the thyroid gland, and certain foods can inhibit your body’s ability to absorb the replacement hormones you may take as part of your thyroid treatment.

What not to eat when you have hypothyroidism.

  • Soy: According to a study, phytoestrogens in soybeans and foods rich in soy may inhibit the activity of the enzyme that produces thyroid hormones.
  • Calcium and iron supplements: calcium and supplements can change the effectiveness of most thyroid medications.
  • Certain vegetables: Vegetables rich in fiber, like cabbage, Brussels sprouts, spinach and broccoli
  • Cassava
  • Peanuts
  • Turnips
  • Linseed
  • Kohlrabi
  • Mustard
  • Mustard Greens
  • Coffee
  • Peaches
  • Rutabagas
  • Millet
  • Cauliflower
  • Bamboo shoots
  • Tempeh
  • Garden Kres
  • Bok Choy
  • Canola Oil

Leading an overall healthy lifestyle—one that includes eating well and exercising—can help you manage hypothyroidism.

People with hypothyroidism condition need treatment. Depending on the cause of hypothyroidism, patients may need treatment for the rest of their lives. Follow up with your doctor to make sure your medication is right. All thyroid diseases can be treated, resulting in normal thyroid function.

  • FootwearThere is a proper way to buy shoes.  The first step is to decide what your needs are.  Know exactly what you want and feel comfortable in.  If you have difficulty finding comfortable shoes, you may want to consider going to a shoe store that have knowledgeable shoe fitters.  Shop for shoes at the end of the day when your feet are at their largest. Have both feet measured.     Keep in mind your shoes should fit your feet and not have to make your feet fit the shoe!

Avoid Wearing Tight Shoes

  • You may have noticed your feet hurting after you wear a certain type of shoe. Your feet should not hurt-ever. Tight shoes can worsen bunions, distort toe shape and cause painful foot growths.  Are you wearing high heels?  Avoid shoes that have heels higher than 2 1/2″  for everyday wear. Toe boxes should be wide; pointed toe shoes shouldn’t begin their narrowing shape until well past the ball of your foot. To protect your Achilles tendon from shortening, alternate heel heights regularly.
  • Flip-flops and completely flat shoes do not provide support for your arch. Neither does walking barefoot. Women are especially prone to developing flat fee, which can lead to other foot problems. To keep feet strong and healthy, minimize the amount of time you wear shoes that lack supportive arches.
  • Alternate the shoes you wear each day. That may mean having two pairs of favorite everyday style, shoes need time to air out to avoid triggering foot odor or infections.  If you have a problem with smelly feet, soak them in a mixture of vinegar and water.

Find The Right Match For Your Feet

  • Shoes and health are linked to one another and it is very important that you do not forget about this relationship.  If you have a shoe that fits, then wear it. There is an  abundance of quality footwear in the market available in a large variety in color and style.  Never compromise the purchase of your shoes in any manner!

You already know it’s important to count carbs and limit regular sugar intake with diabetes, but how sugar-free candy fits into this picture is less clear. Here’s what to know before indulging.

If you have diabetes, you know that while sugar doesn’t directly cause the disease, foods with too much of the ingredient can make it more difficult for you to control your blood glucose levels.

Counting Sugar Alcohols

Here’s what you need to know:

Because sugar alcohols are hard for the body to digest, the effect on blood sugar levels is less than standard sugar. When counting carbohydrates for products made with sugar alcohols, subtract half of the grams of sugar alcohol listed on the food label from the total grams of carbohydrate.

Remember that because sugar alcohols are harder for your body to digest, eating too many sugar alcohols may cause digestive complaints like gas, cramping and diarrhea.

Now let’s practice using the sample food label shown here:

  • Nutritions Facts
  • Locate the total carbohydrate in one serving. You will see that the total carbohydrate is 29 grams.
  • The amount of sugar alcohol is 18 grams per serving.
  • Calculate half the grams of sugar alcohol (18 grams of sugar alcohol divided by 2 equals 9 grams).
  • Subtract only half of the grams of sugar alcohol from the total carbohydrate Count this product as 20 grams of carbohydrate (29 grams total carbohydrate minus 9 grams sugar alcohol equals 20 grams of carbohydrate).

It’s true that sugar alcohols such as sorbitol, xylitol, and mannitol, don’t affect blood sugars as dramatically as other carbohydrates do. So sugarfree candy with most of the total carbs coming from these alcohols will typically have less impact on your blood sugar. Although some sugar substitutes do not add calories or carbohydrate, many do. And it is the carbohydrate that has the greatest effect on blood glucose. People with diabetes do not manage their condition by cutting “sugary” foods out of their diet.

Disadvantages Of Sugar-Free

When you’re considering foods with low- or reduced-calorie sweeteners, always check the Nutrition Facts on the label. Many of the food products containing these types of sweeteners still have a significant amount of carbohydrate, calories and fat, so never consider them a “free food” without checking the label. By comparing the calories in the sugar-free version to the regular version, you’ll see whether you’re really getting fewer calories.

  • Sugar-free candies and other treats may still contain carbohydrates. In addition, some sugar-free candy contains significant calories and is high in saturated or trans fats. 
  • Fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains are examples of healthy foods. Candy doesn’t count as healthy, even if it is sugar-free. If you eat a lot of candy and aren’t ready to cut back, however, switching to sugar-free candy may help you better control your carbohydrate intake. The long-term goal, though, is to cut down on all candy.

Are there benefits to choosing sugar-free candy?

  • When eaten in moderation, sugar alcohols don’t dramatically increase blood sugars.
  • Possibly may contain fewer total carbohydrates than regular candy.
  • Has less added sugar than regular candy.
  • It may have fewer calories than regular candy.

The bottom line: Most people can enjoy treats — with or without sugar — as part of a healthy diet. If you have questions about sugar or carbohydrate intake, consult your doctor or a dietitian.

As You Get Older Foot Problems Appear

Foot pain and foot disorders are common concerns for older people. Foot pain makes it harder to walk and carry out your daily functions, and can interfere with activities such as getting out of a chair or climbing stairs. You may also have trouble with your balance, and your chance of falling increases. Pain that leads to less mobility can result in weight gain, weakness, and decreased heart function. But just because you are getting older, you do not have to put up with foot pain. Being able to walk well is extremely important, since walking is one of the best ways to exercise and keep fit.

As baby boomers stride into their senior years, the feet that stood by them for so long, are wearing out. The baby boomer population is aging.

They danced the night away in nightclubs doing the Twist and Macarena, enduring deadly stilettos, go-go boots and platform shoes. Along with all their steps through life, baby boomers are experiencing a breakdown of their feet when they need to rely on them most.Couple Dancing Rock & Roll  Arches that stood up to thousands of steps fail.


Suffering for fashion

  • Straight toes for generations now start to curl.
  • Tendons begin to tear after years of using stairs.
  • We are limping into an era of bad feet. The average American and Canadian is now older and heavier than any time previously in history.
  • Age and weight are hard on the joints and affect many other body parts. Our feet, being the foundation of the body, take on more stress than any other structure in the body.
  • The foot is very mechanical and has a load limit.
  • High stress practices, from running to wearing fashionable or uncomfortable shoes, take a toll after time.

FEET SUFFERING IN HIGH HEELSWomen who wear high heels, often wear the wrong size shoe and report the most foot pain. Most women mentioned style as their reason for wearing painful shoes.

The arch is supported by the posterior labial tendon, which runs from the calf, past the inside of the ankle. Overtime, stress can stretch the tendon until the arch begins to sag, making the foot longer and wider.  This occurs as the arch drops. You need to accommodate the middle age spread by changing the shoe size that you are used to wearing. Improper fitted shoes can increase the risk of pinched nerves, hammer toes or bunions from the shoe rubbing or squeezing the foot.

If the tendon tears or stretches, the arch can collapse.  This can cause flat feet, a more serious problem in which the feet ache and the ankles roll inwards.



FEET WITH FALLEN ARCHESFallen arches are just one of many age-related foot problems. Time can also twist lesser toes, says Doctor Michael Kennedy, a Health and Science University Orthopedist. Opposing muscles usually balance to hold the toes in place, says Kennedy.  But over the years, the bigger outer muscle can overpower the weaker, inner muscles, causing toes to bend up at the first point (hammertoe) or last (mallet toe), or even curl into a claw toe.



Years of wearing shoes that are too tight can also worsen bunions, a flaw which makes bony bumps that misalign the big toe. Extra weight contributes to a few serious foot problems. One is plantar fasciitis, a leading cause of heel pain commonly seen in overweight people. With plantar fasciitis, a heel-to-toe of tissues called the plantar fasciitis, become inflamed, causing pain, especially in the morning.


Observance and early care are good practice for all foot woes. When caught early, many foot problems can be treated with modest measures including supportive shoes and inserts called orthotics. Simply switching to comfortable, well-fitted shoes can ease many foot ailments. Left untreated, foot problems can affect your everyday quality of life. Plantar Fascittis

Causes of foot pain can be related to many conditions. Arch and ankle pain is not a condition in itself, but a result of some underlying cause. However, most frequently the cause is a common condition called plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis is a pain in the arch due to excessive stretching and tearing of the tendons on the underside of the foot, usually due to over-pronation. With repeated tearing, these tendons can become inflamed and very painful. Once the tendons that support the arch lose their elasticity they are no longer able to support the structure of the foot, resulting in arch pain while running and walking.

Treatment And Prevention

This is a common foot condition that can be easily treated. If you suffer from arch pain avoid high heeled shoes whenever possible. Buy supportive shoes, purchase sturdy shoes with cushioning along the sole, and walk around before purchasing to evaluate their strain. Depending on your lifestyle, your shoes and insoles need to support both your everyday activities (like work) and more intense activities (such as running, jogging, or sports). When the foot pain is pronation related (flat feet) a proper arch support is recommended for treating the pain.  Arch supports provide shock absorption and cushion your feet as you walk.

Type 2 diabetes is a disease in which your pancreas does not produce enough insulin, or your body does not properly use the insulin it makes. Type 2 diabetes, is the most common type of diabetes. Hyperglycemia, is another name for high blood sugar. High blood sugar occurs when your blood sugar (or blood glucose) levels are above normal. Blood glucose is your main source of energy and comes mainly from the food you eat. The right diet can keep blood sugar levels in check, while the wrong foods can lead to dangerous complications.

Arch Pain: Primary Causes and Best Remedies

Arch pain is one of the most common pain of the foot. This pain is defined by inflammation and burning in the arch of the foot. The arch extends the whole length of your foot and which gives it that characteristic shape.

Sometimes arch pain is a symptom of a more specific foot ailment. Read the following articles to see if any of these ailments are the culprit behind your arch pain.

If none of these foot conditions seem to apply, you may have a condition called posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD). When this tendon is weakened or overworked, it creates a type of arch pain that stresses your plantar fascia (the band of connective tissue that stretches from the heel to the ball of your foot), causes gradual fatigue of your arch, and decreases the amount of support your arch gets from the posterior tibialis tendon


What Causes Arch Pain?

  • Arch sprains and fractures. Sprains and fractures often result from excessive stress to the foot either through strenuous exercise, impact, or flexing the foot. There will be pain when pressure is applied along the midfoot area. Your doctor may do a variety of flexing and stress evaluations along with x-ray to determine the extent of the injury.
  • Plantar fasciitis. This is the most common cause of pain in the arch of the foot. It is caused by excessive stretching of the plantar fascia, a ligament that connects your heel to your toes. The ligament is not meant to stretch and when it does it can cause considerable pain and burning. Symptoms of plantar fasciitis include increased pain when you wake up in morning or after any extended rest. If left untreated this condition can lead to bone spurs.
  • Simply put if you run or walk extensively during your day this could lead to excessive wear and tear on your arches, tendons, and ligaments.
  • Muscle Strains. The muscles that support your arch and foot can get strained like any other muscle in your body. This often ties into overuse and strenuous activities.
  • Inflammation from arthritis can cause burning, swelling and pain just about all your joints. Your feet are no exception.

Besides the fact that these conditions are uncomfortable and impact your activities, it is also important to treat arch pain as it can lead to other conditions if ignored.

Treatments For Pain In Arch of The Foot

  • Cold Therapy. Wraps, compresses or even a plastic bag of ice wrapped in cloth can help relieve the pain and swelling. This is important to do when you first notice discomfort and is easily done from you own home.
  • Wear Comfortable Shoes. Avoid high heels. Wear shoes that support your arch and are good for the activity that you will be doing such as running, walking and so on. This can also reduce pain in the arch of the foot and other common foot aches.
  • Arch Supports. Specialized arch supports.
  • Night Splints. You can wear these supports at night to alleviate some of the stress and pressure that your heels and arches are under by keeping everything properly aligned while you sleep.
  • Proper Exercise. Strengthening your muscles is important for your overall bone health because your muscles keep everything aligned. If you want to work specifically on the muscles that will help your arches then target your central leg muscle and the Achilles tendon.

Avoid Excessive Overuse. While you heal it is important to know your limits. If the pain persists, your doctor may direct you to do physical therapy which will help you through manual manipulation and directed exercises to strengthen your muscles.

While most of these treatments can be done at home, if the pain persists, there is excessive bruising or you cannot bear any weight on the foot then you should seek medical attention.

How do you treat dry cracked heels?

If you are a fan of flip-flops and going barefoot during the warm summer months, you may go into the fall season with damaged feet. These shoes naturally take a toll on heels, causing dryness and cracking.  In fact, the tops of the feet are an easy place to get sunburned. Sun exposure, rough surfaces , and general lack of protection can lead to dry cracked heels and feet.  Diabetes can interrupt the body’s ability to produce oils, making the skin less supple and more susceptible to extreme dryness.  Disease disorders such as athlete’s foot, psoriasis , eczema, and thyroid disease may cause cracked heels.  Excess weight can create extra pressure on the feet.

Cracking feet can be both embarrassing and painful. If  you want to be able to flaunt your footsies, start using a treatment of coconut oil each day.  You’ll have smooth feet in no time.

Here are some tips to help you recover softer, more attractive feet.

  • Soak: Your feet with a nourishing softening soak. In warm water put some Epsom salts, little moisturizing oil and a little lemon juice.
  • Exfoliate: Get rid of that dry rough skin.  Use a pumice stone on your heal.  Be cautious not to rub too hard.
  • Moisturize: Rinse and dry your feet, moisturize your feet right away. You need a deep moisturizer that will penetrate the rough skin.  I use Coconut Organic Oil which penetrates quickly with natural essential fatty acids.
  • Soothe overnight: I you want to make fast progress on softening your feet, apply a moisturizer and put on soft, cotton socks to bed overnight. The socks will help lock in the moisture.

hunger and they can become increasingly thirsty. If high blood glucose levels are left untreated,
it can lead to serious health complications.


Diabetic neuropathy is the family of nerve disorders which is caused by diabetes. The people living with diabetes over time can develop nerve damage throughout their body.

People with nerve damage have no symptoms, but others may notice symptoms like tingling, pain, or numbness – loss of feelings in their arms, legs, hands and feet.

Nerve problems can occur in any part of the organ system such as the heart, sex organs, and digestive tract.

About 60 – 70% of people living with diabetes have one or another form of neuropathy that they are dealing with. At any time, people with diabetes can develop different nerve problems, but risk rises as they age and with the duration of diabetes.

Individuals who have had diabetes for a minimum of 25 years have the highest rate of diabetic neuropathy.

Diabetic neuropathy is also common among people when their body system is unable to control their blood glucose, popularly known as blood sugar, as well as those who have high levels of blood pressure, blood fat and those who are overweight.


• Autoimmune factors causing inflammation in nerve because there are different types of diabetic neuropathy, the causes may differ. Research has
shown that prolonged exposure to blood sugar is the cause of nerve damage. However, nerve
damage is probably as a result of the combination of several factors:


• Neurovascular factors, which lead to damage of blood vessels carrying nutrients and oxygen
to the nerves
• Metabolic factors like long duration of diabetes, low levels of insulin, high blood glucose and
abnormal blood fat levels
• Inherited traits that increase the susceptibility to nerve disease
• Mechanical injury to nerves like carpal tunnel syndrome
• Lifestyle factors like alcohol use and smoking.


The symptoms of nerve damage may include
• Problem with urination
• Tingling, numbness, pain in the toes, hands, fingers, arms, legs and feet
• Nausea, indigestion or vomiting
• Constipation or diarrhea
• Weakness
• Vaginal dryness in women or erectile dysfunction in men


The symptoms of diabetic neuropathy depend on the affected nerves and the type of
neuropathy. Most people that have nerve damage have no symptoms. Other people with nerve
damage experience symptoms as a result. This causes pain in the feet, tingling, and numbness. Most nerve
damage occurs over many years, so symptoms are always minor at first. The symptoms can
involve the motor, sensory and involuntary – or autonomic – nervous systems.

This question is quite popular among people living with diabetes. Over time, diabetes that is not
well-managed may cause damage to the nerve (also known as diabetic neuropathy). Diabetic
neuropathy can cause pain and tingling, and can also make you lose feeling in your feet.

The worst thing about losing feeling in your feet is that, when there is a blister on your foot orpebbles in your sock, you will not know and it may lead to cuts and sores. If there are cuts and
sores on your foot, it can become infected and lead to more severe health problems.

Diabetes can also reduce the flow of blood in your feet, and if enough blood is not flowing to your feet and legs, it can make it difficult for an infection or sores to heal. Most bad infections do not heal, and the infection could lead to severe complications such as Gangrene.

Foot Ulcers and Gangrene that do not get better with treatment can lead to the amputation of your foot, toe, or part of your leg.

The reason surgeons perform an amputation on people with foot ulcers, bad infection, and Gangrene that is not treatable, is to prevent it from spreading to the other parts of the body and save your life. Taking good care of your feet is paramount to preventing Gangrene and severe infections. Although nerve damage from diabetes is not common, it can cause the shape of your feet to change, e.g. Charcot’s foot.

Charcot’s foot may start with warmth, swelling, and redness. Later the bones in your toes and feet can break or shift resulting in your feet having an odd shape called Rocker Bottom.


Even if people with diabetes have common foot problems, such problems can be dangerous and may lead to even more serious foot problems.

People with diabetes are at the increased risk for serious complications related to these conditions, including amputation and infection.


Calluses and corns are the thickening of the skin. These two foot problems are caused as a result of rubbing or repeated pressure on the same area of the foot.

Corns can be found around the raised area of your feet, where it rubs against your shoes, while calluses are mostly found around the heels or underneath the feet.
If calluses and corns are not treated, they can act just like stones in your shoe and put pressure on the tissue underneath your foot.

The pressure can lead to ulcers, infection or bruising. It is often difficult to see the damage because it is underneath the callus or corn. You may not feel pain if you suffer from nerve damage. A Podiatrist can help you treat the corns and calluses.


A foot ulcer is an area of the skin on the foot, that is broken and taking a longer than normal time to heal. The inside of the foot ulcer often looks white.
Foot ulcers mostly occur over the ball of the foot or on the bottom of the big toe. The ulcers at the side of your feet are most times a result of poorly fitting shoes.

Even if some foot ulcers don’t hurt, you should visit your doctor right away. If you fail to treat your foot ulcer, it can result in gangrene or infection, which can lead to the loss of limb (amputation).
You are most likely to have foot ulcers if:
• You’ve had a foot ulcer in the past
• Are over 40 years old
• Have nerve damage in your feet
• You have diabetes
• Have poor blood circulation in your feet
• You’ve had diabetes for an extended period

Athlete’s foot is also known as fungal infection. Itching, redness and cracked skin are associated with this condition. When fungus enters the cracks in the skin, it causes an infection that people with diabetes need to have treated quickly.

Brittle, thick, yellow-brown, or opaque nails are quite common with fungal nail infections. The infected part may seem to pull away from the rest of the nail.

The fungus thrives in a moist, dark and warm environment created by wearing closed-toed shoes.

Injuries to the nail also increase the risk of fungal infection. Though it’s hard to treat these infections they are treatable.

Blisters are fluid-filled areas of skin formed due to friction. They are mostly filled with blood, pus, or the clear watery part of blood known as serum. Depending on the cause of your blister, it could hurt or itch a little or a lot.

A bunion is a red, sore, callused area of the foot that forms on the outside of the joint on the big toe. This condition causes the big toe to angle inward. The bunions may appear on the two feet and tend to be hereditary in families.

Wearing a high-heeled shoe that has no adequate room for the toes increases the risk of bunions by pushing your big toes into an unnatural position. Bunions may be more severe for a person with diabetes.

Dry and cracked skin allows germs and bacteria to penetrate your body which can later lead to infection. You are more likely to develop skin problems with diabetes, but you can help prevent this by keeping your feet healthy.

Anybody can have foot ulcers, but it is usually more severe when it occurs in people with diabetes. When the blood sugar levels are fluctuating or high, regular skin injury that would normally heal easily may not repair itself properly because of nerve damage. In fact, a mild injury can result in a foot ulcer.

The hammertoe is a bent toe and the result of the weakened muscle that makes tendons shorter, causing toes to curl under the feet. When the muscles of the toes are weak, it contributes to the curled appearance of toes known as “hammertoes.”

The weakness shortens the tendons of the toes and causes them to contract. This foot problem can be hereditary and can also be caused as a result of wearing shoes that are too small.

Hammertoes can lead to foot problems like sores, difficulty walking, blisters and calluses.

An ingrown toenail may result in pressure, pain and even a cut to your skin that can lead to infection. Wearing ill-fitting or tight shoes can increase the risk of an ingrown toenail.

High- impact activities like aerobics and running may also contribute to this problem. Inadequately trimmed toe nails, toe crowding, and walking may also cause ingrown toenails.

A thickened area with a pinhole or small black spot on the soles of your feet is likely to be plantar warts. A virus causes plantar warts, and the affected parts of the skin can be painful. It
may occur alone or in a cluster.

It is important to avoid walking barefoot on warm, moist surfaces where wart viruses may be alive. Also remember not to share shoes, socks or razor with another person to prevent planter warts.

Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases and its prevalence is on the increase. The life expectancy of people living with diabetes is shortened by about 15 years, and 75% of them die of macrovascular complications.
The risk of foot problems in people living with diabetes is high, because of either peripheral arterial disease (poor blood supply because of medium-sized blood vessels in the legs) or diabetic neuropathy (degeneration or nerve damage), or both.

Foot complications are quite common in people with diabetes. The research estimated that 10% of people living with diabetes will have a diabetic foot ulcer at some point in their lives.
Prevention of diabetes foot problems involves a combination of different factors.
• Choosing proper footwear
• Regular foot and leg self-examinations
• Good diabetes control
• Regular exercise, if possible
• Keeping footpaths clear to avoid injury
• Checking your feet every day
• Stop smoking
•  Elevate your feet
• Wash your feet with warm water and soap every day
• Smooth calluses and corns gently
• Wiggle your toes for some minutes throughout the day
• Trim your toenails straight across
• Wear shoes and socks at all times
• Protect your feet from cold and hot extremities

• Calluses with dried blood inside it, which most times can be the first sign of a wound under the callus
• Skin on your foot that becomes warm, painful or red – signs of a possible infection
